Inspiration

These things are great. The two 7 inch record covers and mixtape. The covers because of the hand drawn features of both. The mixtape because you have to create something when you make a mixtape. It is a labour of love. You have to sit there and make the tape, changing tracks and then you do all the songs and make a little cover. Even though they are all sold identical they always end up being a personalised work of art. I love the mixtape.

Type Treat

Just playing around with text. A hand-lettered way of presenting type. Gives a good feel of hand movements in the pencil strokes.

The boy is a blur dreaming of idols
Defeated by schoolyard orphans
Regality performs for twiggy
Her family portrait missing
Soldiers erase the mess they made
Fading stories of primate eggs
Professional fantasies for competative youth
Rubber duck explosives overlooked by authority
Sign language controlling communist clones
Far off lover slumber with your message in a bottle
Strings sing of political birds too fat for flight
Below glowing neon street

This Week

So this week what has happened?
Well on Monday I did a creative writing one-day workshop with Helen Cross to try and improve my writing skills. It was very interesting, I got a lot from it, on how to reduce stuff down to a more interesting and sensual piece of writing, its not all about imagery you have to smell stuff too!
So did that and that is where the poem ive just posted up came from, im looking at hand written typography aswell. Moving away from pure collage illustrations and more illustrated/illustrative type, hand made type. Thinking about trying some mono-printing, chalks, perhaps letraset style stuff, and applying text to found objects, short poems on scraps of found paper and such. Using collage as a medium and inspiration for writing content from rather than creating the image itself.
I want to try and use the kind of simple techniques you would use as a child, papier-mache, chalks, wax crayons etc and translate them into my current poetry/creative/abstract work.
So thats where I'm at right now.
Plan for next week: Buy a different newspaper everyday and create a poem from the its images and then present it in someway, as a text sculpture or a print, or image, or apply text to found materials, jsut what ever takes me and see where it goes.
We used to ride the rotten tractor
We played diggers on the step
As weeds flourished down below
We played crazy golf
Hit and miss
Dad chased the ball to stop its salty splash
Our cliff top caravan now left behind

Fishy Launderette

Fishy Launderette

Fish eye world,
Run by mustachioed men,
Overpriced caffeine,
Sharking microscopic mice,
Cows hide as birds fly,
White rabbit airlines,
Bombshell gentleman's novels,
Read by cobblers,
In packed orchard homes,
With dogs shaven by launderette gravediggers

Stuff To Check Out

- Jeff Keedy
- Robert Crumb
- Vince Frost
- Jake Tilson

Scooter Trash

Riding a scooter wearing wellies,
Like vacuuming naked in the wet weather,
Robots run by political vultures flying like planes,
Mobile phones in supermarkets,
Causing drought in Mexico,
Dead birds,
Big boats,
The man who keeps the sea on a leash,
Whilst shopping trollies run amok,
Like two donkeys in a tank,
Spill the Trash

Thursday 5th October

Today I decided to take a change from what I have been doing and start to write my own stories/poems in preparation for the creating writing workshop on monday. I want to retain the abstraction and collage concept behind them but use it in a different way. To do this is have collected images to write the poems from.

So instead of using the story to make a picture from, take the pictures to form a story. So effectively using the newspaper as a whole to find the images from, front to back I selected images from todays edition of the Guardian; and created a story that connects the images in an abstract story-telling fashion like before.

I have chosen to do this because I feel that I am more in control for interpreting the images and the language I can use whilst still retaining the boundary of using the images I find.

Further I can make three-dimensional text using cardboard and papier mache so I am not wasting the old newspaper and I can paint onto the text and create settings and scenery and possibly props and characters should I need to if my work goes in that way as I previously envisioned it might. It really depends on how I choose to visually realise my poetry.

My "poetry" that is you understand not "my poetry"

Other Ramblings...

Concept and theory are important factors in my work. I believe that without an idea or concept behind work it is merely passive and has no soul and doesn't communicate anything.

In the past I have been too concerned with satisfying targets and other people, leaving my work to be more of a chore than anything to enjoy. I want to change this now I have been given the chance to write my own brief.

I need to learn how to articulate my ideas more clearly to other people.

My strengths are seeing alternative perspectives.

I like the handcrafted feel to work either drawing or collage etc.

I want to create a feeling with my work rather than any particular aesthetic. I am influenced by the concept of DIY and Lo-Fi art where something is modified or created to suit your needs and the joy of sharing it with other people.

New New Proposal

Enjoyment is the purpose of my creativity. I want to reflect this in my work using illogical and abstract information as a source to create imagery and objects with stories behind them. Thes stories are to be created by editing previously written articles and transforming them into dream like almost poem-esque abstract sections of text to base images around. This organic process means that there is no definate style or outcome. Newspaper articles will be used as my original story sources. The process is very instant and ideas are formed and explored throughout each piece.

I am influenced by the concept of DIY and Lo-Fi art where something is modified and/or created by you to suit your needs and the joy of sharing it with other people.

Aim

The feeling that you are missing out on something but it isn't important because you fill in the gaps yourself.

Self Feedback - Tuesday 3rd October

Compared to many of the sotires made so far teh best ones are from news papers. I reckon this is from the fact that the stories are already fairly short so the parts to be edited are more complete so they are more abstract but make more sense and generally have more of the features I like. Which is a shame because I just bought 4 books to use! Possibly I could use them at some later time. The drawing style that has come with the stories is good at explaining the story and being interesting images in their own right.

Is it important whether the text is accompanying the image or not?

Does it make more or less sense?

Snow Storm

His frozen assets would fight the anti-crime government on civil grounds.

Jury

The jury that had dealt with dodgy businessmen broke down and wept last year. Last week a vindication adopted by Ms Earl stole the agency and spent a prolonged courtroom struggle in Mr Creaven's team.

We're Not Raising Cameras

"We have reason to believe you are the owner of this camera plantation"

"They are not mine!!"

Global Transaction

Guilty global business in Ireland enjoyed in Spain from properities in Ireland accused of the biggest crime that the system, alone, between countries on the domestic market. Computer chips sold to us disappear between the carousel with each transaction.

Me Against Me

People within the team who do not want him to display the whole team from the hand of the current Chinese weekend.

Capitalism

Top priority to capitalise on unhappiness as the true guardian is expected in three words. Three: Context...Cerebal...Palsy...

Guilt

Guilty racehorses might seem to hand its part in Ireland three years ago. The pioneering magazine hero lost to Captain Kirk would be Jessica Rabbit. His favourite gag eventually discovered an enormous something that months later was codenamed British Garda Assets for a numbers of years had attracted attention starting at the age of 22.

Pay Day

Employers pay some workers salaries. Yesterday thousands of employers from Luxembourg challenged someone including the civil service to justify discovering that male, based on the lenght of sex, had been promoted because he had six years back-dated pay. The enormous vice benefits system unreasonably. The government will need to remove their heads from the sand. Justify this.

Hamburg Women

After ten o'clock seven women filed into Hamburg. The pleasantly warm women stepped out of Carmen Mory, the emblem of Switzerland. The sixy-year-old sat bolt upright obeying the orders of Military Police. All the women wore their chests obscured by the dock. Unaware of what they did the President was followed by C L Stirling.

Before The Jungle

Before the jungle he had handfuls of wild berries. He detected a two-lane black topped highway. The sea was artificial as if it were deliberate. The horse was soon out of sight. He would need to raid the valley light a gigantic land crab behind the mountains. His grandfather had avoided the glare of the midday.

Son Of An Estate Agent

From Compton in Dorset the son of an estate agent was not the original butcher. His son reieved the education in previously run butcher's shop. The inn trade remained with his parents. Clearly this was a further two lodgers on the night of the census. In the local a butcher, a dairyman, and cheese would therefore have outlets within easy walking distance. A fact we often take for granted in today's world.

Proposal

Capture the feeling inside people of happy confusion from simple things that has been lost by those who have been educated to believe what they are sold. Creating inspiration by leaving some of the gaps unfilled for people to fill in themselves. Stories re-written from other stories, images made from other images. Instant art, I want to inspire other people to enjoy creating for themselves, to pull at their inquisitive nature. Using found and self-made materials. No set idea of what the outcome or context should be, just the feeling that it will bring.
